Big job, little resources …

February 7, 2013 Hebrews 12:18-19, 21-24;  Mark 6:7-13

There’s a lot of action between Jesus and the Twelve in today’s Gospel!

There’s a call – we read – Jesus “summoned” the Twelve.

There’s a commission – Jesus “sends” them.

There’s support – Jesus pairs them up with each other.

There’s an empowerment – Jesus gives them authority.

Then – there’s a response … they “go off” (they journey) to preach repentance … to drive out demons … and to anoint and cure the sick.

imagesThe Twelve were to do all this with very little material resources … they were to travel light … no extra clothes … no food … no money.  All they had with them was the power of Jesus and their faith. Overall … in order to successfully fulfill their mission and ministry … this demanded great dependence on… and trust in God.

In truth … they had little materially … but gave much spiritually. That’s really following the example of Jesus!

We each have these dynamics of call, commission, support, empowerment, journeying operating in our faith life too.

May we each have the grace … the faith … the trust in God as we journey in our every day encounters … to share the message of the Gospel with others.

Sure I pray …. when?

May 22, 2012   Acts 20:17-27;  John 17:1-11a

As we read scripture … very often we read that Jesus withdrew to pray.

Jesus felt the necessity to address the Father in prayer … He shows us the importance of prayer … and even taught us how to pray … giving us the Our Father … and in today’s Gospel … giving an example … a format for prayer.

Jesus came to glorify the Father … to teach us how to live … and to bring us to salvation.  There is a clear unity between the Father, Son and Spirit.

The prayer we hear in today’s Gospel has three parts …

Jesus praying for His own mission …

Praying for His disciples …

And praying for all those who will be disciples

The prayer we hear in the Gospel today is praise and glory to God … it’s a pattern we can follow.  We too give glory to God … we pray for what we need … we pray in the name of Jesus for all who carry out His mission.

Jesus gives us the outline and the example of how we can communicate with the Father in prayer.

Let us confidently do our part and pray for the grace we need to accomplish the work God has designed for us.
